An architectural research about:

Environments for dwelling and care intended for fragile elderly people in their third age

Is there a connection between the architectural concept of a building intended for elderly mentally and physically frail people and the sensation of well-being among the elderly, their relatives and the staff in the unit?

This is one of the questions in an interdisciplinary architectural research pro-ject for a doctor’s thesis, entitled ENVIRONMENTS FOR DWELLING AND CARE INTENDED FOR FRAGILE ELDERLY PEOPLE IN THE THIRD AGE, and executed at KTH, Campus Haninge, Sweden. Departing from his own competence as architect and experience of designing buildings for elderly people, Jonas E Andersson, architect SAR/ MSA (member of the Swedish Association for Architects), tries to study the correlation between the architectural concept of a home for fragile elderly people and the personal estimation of well-being among the elderly and the staff.

In a home in the Swedish municipality of Haninge, 10 kilometres south of Stockholm, the PhD-student will perform a study to identify opinions and remarks made upon the spatial design of the building. The study will be executed at a unit for elderly with dementia as well as at a unit for elderly with handicap or in great need of care. Of particular interest is the capacity of the architectural concept to serve as a mnemonic support in everyday life for elderly people with dementia. In another home, now under construction, a study focuses on the intentions stipulated during the building process. A licentiate treatise is due for august 2005.
