Light and Design
At the Light and Design division, we shape the qualities of light and dark in space to support experience while carefully balancing these effects with their impact on the environment.
Light and lighting, fundamental components in architecture, are essential for human perception and well-being, while they contribute to social, economic and environmental sustainability. In fact, the quality of light and darkness rhythms in architecture and the built environment – both daylight and artificial light – influences vision, perception and behaviour and a wide range of physiological and psychological responses on humans and other species.
We specialize in Lighting Design in Architecture at the graduate and postgraduate level, with a dedicated Master level programme in Architectural Lighting Design, 60 ECTS, and educational classes for students in the Architecture programme. Our research projects, that involve PhD and postdoc positions, are performed in collaboration with researchers from diverse disciplines, such as Architecture, Psychology and Medicine, Ergonomy, Media and Arts.
Our research and education are grounded between and across different methodologies and approaches, including design theory and practice, field and lab experiments, exploratory research-by-design, and case studies. Our dedicated Lighting Design Laboratory, a physical space for testing, mock-ups and experimentation, serves educational and research activities that stimulate human-centered innovation in the field of lighting design and technology, applied to architectural spaces.
Our students, researchers and educators come from all over the world and with diverse backgrounds, all joined by the fascination and passion of working with light as an architectural medium and “material”.
The Lighting Design division is dedicated to promoting quality, openness, professionalism, and high competence, connecting knowledge development in Swedish and Nordic lighting conditions with the global context through collaboration and exchange. Located in one of the world’s most innovative cities, KTH is a global leader in Lighting Design education and research. Join us in shaping a brighter, more sustainable future.
