Symposium: 'Transversal Ecologies: Architecture, Planning and Urban Design' (Dec 15)

Welcome to a symposium on the future of architecture, planning and urban design at the KTH School of Architecture. Through a series of presentations and discussions with Susanna Hagan, Nina-Marie Lister, Martin Melosi, Luciana Parisi, Mark Purcell and Damon Rich ‘Stadsbyggnadsgruppen’ at the KTH-A will open up to and challenge conceptualizations of ecology within the field of architecture, planning and urban design, understood through the lens of bio-ecologies, technologies, politics, landscape, practice and teaching in relation to space and forms of social organization.

Presentations by:


SUSANNAH HAGAN
from Royal College of Art, London, has a long track record of research on ecological urbanism, and has recently published the book ‘Ecological Urbanism: the nature of the city’.

NINA-MARIE LISTER
from Toronto Canada, is founding principal of Plandform Studio. Plandform explores the relationship between landscape, ecology and urbanism through an integrated design-research approach.

MARTIN V. MELOSI
is Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor and Director of the Center for Public History at the University of Houston in Texas. He is internationally renowned for his research in environmental history, urban history, energy history and history of technology.

LUCIANA PARISI
from Goldsmiths, London, focuses her research on critically examining the role of technologies and their integration in architecture and urban planning, and has written the book ‘Contagious Architecture’.

MARK PURCELL
from University of Washington, Seattle, works in research, teaching and practice to discover ways to make cities more democratic.  

DAMON RICH
from Newark, New York, is founder of CUP (Center for Urban Pedagogies) in New York and as worked as Planning Director & Chief Urban Designer for the City of Newark, New Jersey.


The event is arranged by ‘Stadsbyggnadsgruppen’ at the KTH School of Architecture It consists of Alexis Pontvik, Catharina Gabrielsson, Meike Schalk, Daniel Koch, Ann Legeby and Erik Wingqvist. As a part of a commission from KTH they are currently working intensely with a project to renew the urban design research at the KTH School of Architecture, including developing a profile towards sustainability in urban development as an architectural domain.
