Exhibition: "The Vegetable Program" (Multicultural Centre, May 28 - Aug 31)

Over the last two years students from KTH School of Architecture's Studio 2 have been working in the neighbourhoods of Northern Botkyrka south of Stockholm, looking into housing, public space, institutions and life. For the spring semester of 2015 we have created a project around the many balconies in the area. The project is presented as an exhibition and full scale operational models of two balconies that will work as the vegetable and herb garden for the restaurant at the Multicultural Centre (MKC).

Time: Thu 2015-05-28 - Mon 2015-08-31

Location: Mångkulturellt Centrum, Värdshusvägen 7 (T-bana: Fittja)

"WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF ONE MILLION BALCONIES WERE TRANSFORMED INTO CO-OPERATIVE ALLOTMENTS DEDICATED TO THE PRODUCTION OF VEGETABLES?
The purpose of the project  Grönsaksprogrammet   exhibited at the Multicultural Centre in Fittja  until the end of augst, is to raise the question of locally sources food in Sweden's Million Programme neighbourhoods. in cooperation with local actors and organizations, the project has studied ideas on producing foodstuff locally  -from practical concearns regarding growing things on a balcony, to more visionary ideas on the possibilities with organizing larger co-operatives for cultivating vegetables.

All apartments in Fittja have their own balconies and they are a prominent part of the neighbourhood's identity, The students have studied what potential the balconies can have for becoming the residents' own gardens. In Fittje there is already lots of know-how and a well-establshed interest for cultivation  -apart from a popular allotment area there is also several organization using gardening, food and food culture as a tool for integration and entrepreneurship.

The project The Vegetable Program is made up from a pedagogic display with full-scale balcony models, where different solutions for growing on your balcony are presented. The exhibition will be part of the Multicultural Centre's outdoor café and at the same time work as a kitchen garden for the restaurant.
