Abstract

The purpose of this project is to investigate the influence of the ideologies and motivations represented by the members of the committee for the 1947-1955 restoration of the anatomical theater in Uppsala, originally built in 1663. It continues our previous work examining reciprocal relationships between the materializations and processes of transformation of the anatomical theater in Uppsala on the one hand, and identity forming processes that fiction and uphold ideas of Swedish (white) character on the other. This work proposes that the construction and reconstruction of the anatomical theater in Uppsala both model and are active in world-making, identity forming projects of the Swedish Empire (Stormaktstiden) and the Swedish Welfare State (folkhemmet) with their profound relationship to colonial world order and racial logics. Preliminary studies support an understanding of the theater as forming a significant node in a history writing that weaves together ideas of value, anatomy and origin in a narrative that defines a character for and asserts the superiority of a people. In working with the dialogue recorded in the meeting minutes, the physical artifacts discussed within them and the possible motivations and ideologies represented by the people involved in the discussion, we hope to develop our earlier iterations of practice based methods for critical historiography.

This AT - HH project is funded by Konstnärsnämnden (Swedish Arts Grants Committee). It will be included in a publication on our work with the anatomical theater, which is funded by Konstakademien/Ivar och Anders Tengboms fond (the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts).
