The exhibition on display in Triangeln at the KTH School of Architetcure

UGLY DUCKLING
This exhibition is an homage to the KTH-A building on Östermalmsgatan 26, and its 45 years of proud service as an institution producing and disseminating architectural knowledge. The building was inaugurated in 1970 and designed by a team of architects led by Gunnar Henriksson and John Olsson. After the summer of 2015, KTH-A is moving to a new building on KTH Campus.

The exhibit consists of four works that all portray different approaches to the building and its use. Two of them represents an insider’s reflections on the building, on how one’s own experience of it and appreciation of it changes over time. The other two are works by outsiders, commissioned especially for the occasion. They have been given access to the building during its final semester in use and were asked to depict aspects of its ‘architectural subconsious’.

To the general public, the KTH-A building is more often than not reduced to that ugly thing. For the New Brutalist connoisseur, quite the opposite: a misunderstood modernist masterpiece. Hopefully this exhibit can serve to give a more nuanced impression. Neither beautiful swan nor ugly duck, both both-and, and so much more: workplace, production facility, seminar room, laboratory, garage, lunch room, garbage pile, library, courtyard hang-out, storage space, party venue, and too some degree, a second home.

KLARA KÄLLSTRÖM & THOBIAS FÄLDT: '1970-2015'
The artists Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt use the medium of photography to make conceptual work; the camera is a tool for visual thinking. In '1970 - 2015', Källström and Fäldt put the presence of architecture students at the centre of our attention. The still ongoing activity that has taken place in the KTH School of Architecture building on Östermalms-gatan 26 in Stockholm since its inauguration in the 1970’s is made tangible.

Källström and Fäldt have turned their focus to the work tables found in the Upper Atelier. The use of a photographic macro perspective enables a close study of the tabletops. Throughout the years, the surfaces have been marked by the students work. Photographic cut-outs are blown up to make visible the accumulated traces, from the first classes in January 1970 and up until the present, and thus from the very first to the very last student that has passed through the school.

KLARA KÄLLSTRÖM & THOBIAS FÄLDT
have worked collaboratively since 2005 and have had solo exhibitions at galleries and institutions around the world, most recently at CULT Exhibitions in San Francisco (February to April 2015). They are the founders of the publishing company B-B-B-Books together with the design collective 1:2:3. The most recent title is Village (2015) by Källström and Fäldt. Altogether they have released ten books at their press. Their practice also includes public art works such as a commissioned piece for the walls of Danderyd Hospital Underground Station in Stockholm.

TOVE FREIIJ & STEN VILSON: 'NOW AND THEN'

(Many thanks to the team behind Mejan Arc: “Modernism at Risk” (2013) for sharing their archival research about the history of the KTH School of Architetcure building.)

MATTIAS HAMBRAEUS VICTORSON: 'AFTER THE ARCHITECTS'

– A building, subjectivity and time

As a student leaving the school, I wanted to understand the relationship between the school building and myself. I use my own subjectivity as a tool in an attempt to address aspects of architecture I find otherwise difficult to discuss. I’ve put my ears to the walls, read traces from the past and excavated the different layers of my mind to try to get closer to the effects of an architectural object and the stories it stages. What is a building after the architects?

MATTIAS HAMBRAEUS VICTORSON
is a former student of the KTH School of Architecture. The film 'After the Architects' was the main feature of his Degree Project, exhibited and presented at the KTH-A in January 2015. He is now a practicing architect at Murman arkitekter in Stockholm.

STUDIO KUPOL: 'FOUR NIGHTS IN MAY'
The film makers of Studio Kupol was given around-the-clock access to the KTH School of Architecture building during the final semester that the school is in use. They have produced a film that diverges from the general public’s notion of the building as something that is seen and experienced from the street, to focus on its inner life.

The outsider’s perspective is intact, but is instead directed towards the everyday atsmosphere of constant change in an architectural school. Documenting the school during nighttime, the film highlights the noises and sounds of the building, in combination with an intimate but unobtrusive observation of the school, as-found. As first-time guests in the building, they witness its details and fragments, arbitrary piles of furniture and works-in-progress, nooks and crannys, with equal levels of attention.

STUDIO KUPOL
Studio Kupol is a film production studio specialized in portraying the built  envrionment in all its forms. It is run by David Palmberg, architect, and Erik Sandberg, documentary film maker.
