Education
At the Master’s level, architectural education at KTH is structured around a diverse body of knowledge developed within the School’s divisions. These span architecture as cultural practice, technical and material exploration, urban and territorial thinking, and the shaping of light and spatial experience. Together, they form a rich and evolving framework through which architecture is understood, tested, and transformed.
The programme is designed to support self-directed study. Students are encouraged to define their own trajectory, engaging critically with questions that matter to them as they navigate across different fields of architectural knowledge. This approach makes it possible to work across multiple scales of practice, from material detail and spatial atmospheres to buildings, landscapes, and cities.
Teaching is organised through a combination of design studios and seminar courses. Studios provide immersive, project-based environments where architectural ideas are developed through design, experimentation, and making. Seminar courses complement this by offering critical, theoretical, and methodological perspectives that support reflection and positioning within broader disciplinary and societal contexts.
Together, these formats create a flexible and interdisciplinary learning environment. Students engage with contemporary challenges, social, ecological, cultural, and technological, while developing their own architectural voice within a vibrant academic and professional environment.
Over four semesters, each student can select a design studio and a seminar course each term. This structure supports an individual study trajectory while ensuring both depth and breadth of knowledge. The third semester includes preparation for the thesis project, where students define their focus and develop a research and design agenda. The final semester is dedicated to developing the degree project, carried out under the supervision of the School’s experienced teaching staff.
